This week… In maths we have focused on division. We know how to divide up to 4 digits by a 1 digit number using the formal method of short division. In English, we have introduced our new unit of work ‘Skills from Brazil’ which will help us with our persuasive writing. We have also introduced our ‘Extreme Earth’ topic and have looked at the different continents and in the world.
Reading for pleasure is very important and we would like you to take the opportunity to read whenever you can. Remember to get your parents to sign your reading records over the weekend if they hear or see you reading. #wroxhamreading will continue and we will encourage you to challenge yourselves in this initiative.
This week we have been reading:
- ‘Skills from Brazil’ by Dan Freedman
- ‘When The Mountains Roared’ by Jess Butterworth (in line with our ‘Extreme Earth’ topic.)
Next week, we are looking at words with silent letters. We will also be practising these words in class. Could you please start to research any words with silent letters such as ‘ghost’ and make a list of words you come up with. Spellings will be set on Monday and will be tested the following Monday.
We have been practising our 7 and 8x tables this week. We recall the times table up to 12, then write the associated division fact in our maths books.
Next week… Please remember to bring your swimming kit next Monday as we will be starting our swimming lessons. Can you also remember to bring a coat as we will be walking down to the Furzefield Centre. We will also be consolidating our knowledge on division, and moving onto shape. In English, we will be using ‘Skills from Brazil’ as our focus text, but working upon dialogue in texts, use of semi colon and colons in lists plus information texts.
In topic we will be describing and naming the various layers within the Earth and in Science we will be completing the water cycle.
We hope you all have a restful and enjoyable weekend,
The Year 5 team.
